Ourtown

Most residents live in the city, and UCSF provides all residents with a housing stipend to help cover the cost of SF living. We live in lots of different neighborhoods throughout the city. Each has their own personality and charm. You can see an overview of what neighborhoods residents live in as well as their relationship to the various clinical sites on the map below, as well as some fun facts about San Francisco.

Below are some of our favorites in the city and nearby. We've cataloged favorite restaurants, favorite things to do in the city when we have time off, and favorite day trips. There is a lot to offer in the bay area!

Favorite Restaurants

(in no particular order)

Frances
3870 17th St., San Francisco, CA
Audrey states that Frances "is a consistently delicious, farm to table restaurant with a seasonal menu and great wine list. Simple and not overdone." Minnie has been going there for almost 10 years and remarks that it is small, not snobby, and has awesome food and house wine.

Gordo Taqueria
1239 9th Ave., San Francisco, CA
Adam recommends as the best burrito in the city!

Birdsong
1085 Mission St., San Francisco, CA
Alvin recommends as the most innovative food in the city. It's a splurge but amazing quality food you won't find any where else. An amazing place to go for a special occasion.

Sorrel
3228 Sacramento St., San Francisco, CA
Amazing pasta dishes and a seasonal menu that will not disappoint. The service here is excellent!

KAIYO
1838 Union St., San Francisco, CA
Peruvian and Japanese Nikkei fusion cuisine with an excellent cocktail list filled with pisco, a cool vibe, and amazing food. Laura states it's "a must if you are dreaming of a trip to Lima."

Favorites in the City

We have diverse interests and love spending time outside in the city. Here are some of our favorites!

  • Surfing Ocean Beach (or nearby Pacifica for the residents who aren't as experienced)
  • Running outside, to the beach or in Golden Gate Park, often with our dogs (6 residents have dogs in the program). We have several marathon runners in the program. Kudos to Nikki who recently completed Chicago!
  • Exploring restaurants around the city (see above for a subset of our favorites)
  • Attending the SF Ballet
  • Saturday Farmer's Market at the Ferry Building
  • Catching a magic show at the Marakech Magic Theater
  • Roaming around the city and catching the views from the city's many hills

Favorite Day Trips

There is so much within a short drive of the bay area. Here are some of our favorite day off or weekend destinations, arranged by distance from the city.

  • Hiking in the Marin Headlands
  • Hiking, oysters and beaches at Point Reyes
  • Wine tasting in Sonoma and Napa Valley
  • Tomales Bay for oyster shucking
  • Snowboarding in Tahoe (more of a weekend trip than a day trip)
